Player, captain, coach, technical secretary and legend, Roberto Gil (1938-2022) was synonymous with loyalty to Valencia CF and was a symbol of the club.
Roberto Gil Esteve was born on July 30th, 1938 in Paterna, and as a child he went to live in Riba-roja del Túria. After standing out playing for his local team, he joined the youth system at Valencia CF. At the age of 18 he made his debut for VCF Mestalla, and aged 21 he enjoyed his first appearance with the first team. Gil always remembered with pride the moment of his debut, in a tribute match to Antonio Puchades.
He was the heart of Valencia CF in midfield. His physical strength, intelligence and his reading of the game made him the linchpin of the team, and during the 1960s he formed a legendary duo with Paquito. He won three trophies as a Valencianista: Two Fairs Cups in 1962 and 1963, and the Copa del Rey in 1967 that he lifted as captain.
On February 21, 1971, a testimonial to him was held, where he was awarded the Silver Medal for Sporting Merit. Valencia CF presented him with the Gold Insignia, the highest distinction from the club, as did the Valencian Football Federation.
Ten years after his retirement as a player, Gil began a new stage in his career, making the transition to coaching. In 1984 he took over at Valencia CF. In the 1987-88 season, he would return again, to replace Alfredo Di Stéfano. In the 1990s he would move to the position of Sporting Director.
Valencia CF mourn the passing of a true club legend in every facet.
